Faculty of Education Community and Leisure

I M Marsh Campus, Barkhill Road, Liverpool L17 6BD,

Research Directory 2004

Research in the Faculty takes place in 5 centres: Primary, Professional & Education Studies (PPE), Secondary & Vocational Education (SVE), Sport & Dance Studies (SDS), Physical & Outdoor Education (POE) and Tourism, Consumer & Food Studies (TCF). The activities of the faculty are diverse as are the academic specialist areas and interests of the staff. In a number of cases groups of researchers across centres share expertise in educational, health, leisure and scientific research much of which is applied in nature. There is a vibrant research culture, led by 4 professors and 6 readers across the faculty. The emphasis on research is reflected in the planned appointment of director of research to lead research strategy development across the faculty.

Research groups within the faculty exist in the areas of food and nutrition, education, special needs and inclusion, leisure and tourism, physical education, dance and sport. These groups pursue varied research themes supported by an active research student and post doctoral group. In 2004 the faculty set up a “Centre for Educational Research and Evaluation” drawing together pedagogic and other educational researchers from across the university. This centre will become a hub of educational research in the region. The success in external research funding achieved in 2004 will accelerate further development and strengthen the already excellent links between teaching and research.

The faculty welcomed a number of research visitors from across Europe in 2004 as well as influential figures from government health and education agencies. Stronger links with European partners are being developed through UKRO and SOCRATES programmes.

The faculty will continue to promote applied research and offer cutting edge research opportunities in its areas of strength.
